Chapter 2- 10th
Grade drama
Chin Lee Academy, it’s a high school known for being the first to be created when Chin lee was first established as one fourth of this huge manmade land. It was built between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator located in the North Pacific Ocean.
The school was five stories tall, the first floor consisted of the main school facilities like the nurses office and library. The second floor up to the fourth housed in order, the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students. The fifth floor was for all the club rooms that didn’t involve sports.
Since I was a tenth grade student my classes were held on the second floor. The name wasn’t very original, with it being called Chin Lee Academy.
It was now a quarter after eight in the morning and the homeroom teacher has still yet to arrive.
Sitting at my desk located by the window in the back I open up my notebook to look over my homework. I wasn’t really focused today because of what just happened when I arrived with Mai.
Looking out the window I could see student in the physical education class running on the track field. Behind the track field was the swimming building, now it should be filled with the students competing in this years swim meet.
I looked at the door where the teacher should be coming in.
“…guess the teacher isn’t here yet.” I said bringing my attention back to my notebook.
This was normal routine for me arrive to class, be ignored, and finish the assignments that were handed to me.
The teacher being late for class was really bothering me so I opened my messenger bag and reached for the latest novel I was into. It didn’t matter if I was reading in class the teacher would never confront me about it. As I sat there reading away class I could hear the student begin their morning chatter.
“Do you think he did it?”
“It was in the paper…”
“I told you he was horrible…”
The topic at hand wasn’t like before, I didn’t like what was being said so I tried to focus on my book. The sounds of chatter increased making it impossible for me to continue reading.
“That poor teacher… what do think will happen now?”
I heard from a group of girls that were passing by the classroom.
“What happened to the teacher?” I thought to myself pretending to read now.
Moments latter the principal came in, “Ahem…” clearing his throat the principal continued, “May I have your attention, your homeroom teacher Miss Chitose won’t be able to teach today.”
What’s this about, I closed the novel and focused on the principal’s speech.
“Miss Chitose was involved in a pile up on the freeway, she is okay though.” He fixed his collar as if to make it seem like he was a hero. “In her place we homeroom will be self-study until your next class begins.”
Looking up at the principal I notice him looking at me for a second with an angry face.
“Now be sure that you behave while you’re all doing self-study.” With that he headed out the door.
The chatter from the class came back this time it seemed like it was all focused on me.
I didn’t care to hear everyone blame me for what happened, so I reached back into my messenger bag and pulled out earphones plugging them into my phone. Putting on some music I was able to begin reading in peace.
It was now third period and the students were back to talking about their social lives and problems with their parents.
I looked at the clock above to teachers’ dais.
“11:15 am”
It was almost time for lunch and to beat the crowd of students I would head out of the classroom before then.
Sliding back my chair I grabbed my bag and headed for the door. I could feel the glares coming from the students in my class, one more concerning to me was the Student Council President, Reenie Konno.
Opening the classroom door I headed out for an early lunch, I didn’t have to worry about the teacher because they’d never stopped me from leaving classes early. I don’t know if this was from the fact I was a “Straight A” student or the rumors of me being a delinquent.
Closing the door behind me, I made my way to the staircase to the fifth floor.
Arriving on the fifth floor I noticed that students were in their clubrooms, must be because the school administrator was coming to view the student festival this year.
After standing in the hall observing them I had made eye contact with a couple of girls coming out of one of the rooms, I quickly turn and head up the next flight of stairs.
“Just keep moving and ignore them…” Telling myself this I climbed the stairs leading to the roof.
“Good… there’s nobody here…” alone on the rooftop was how I always enjoyed my lunches. Placing my bag of convenience store food on a bench I look outward to the sea.
“If I had some binoculars I bet I could see Hawaii from here.”
The skies were perfect for sleeping… if I wasn’t much of a class ditcher maybe I should spend the rest of the school day on the roof napping.
Taking in a deep breath and breathing in the sea air that reached the school I begin to think of how peaceful it is.
Opening up my lunch climbed atop the extra building that housed the staircase. From there I could get a nice view of the city from above. Picking a spot to sit I reached in the bag pulling out the sandwich. Taking a bite of the first sandwich I brought out the green tea I had also bought.
“How long will it be until I am finally able to leave this city?” I said opening the bottle of green tea.
When I attended school it seemed like time was at a stand still eating my lunches alone didn’t make things flow as well. There was a reason for me being alone most of the time, it was because of a rumor going around even before I came to this school.
Drinking the last of my green tea I look towards the sky where part of earth’s ring could be seen.
About fifteen years ago, before I was even born, a group of scientists had developed a plan to build a ring around the earth. This was to prevent the destruction of solar flares from the sun and foreign objects from space.
But as of nine years ago the great minds that created this big island started to die from unsolved murders putting a halt on the production of earth’s ring. This manmade island housed four main cities Aripine, Chin Lee, Oraibi, and Woodruff.
At the time of the assassinations was when the rumor that being a great mind and scientist was considered a sin and frowned upon.
Half a year since this incident a set of islands had risen from the Pacific Ocean. This new twin island neighbored Hawaii and the Line Islands and were called Adair and Zeniff. It housed the remaining scientist who lived, not even a military or government had touched these two islands.
When the citizens of Aripine, Chin Lee, Oraibi, and Woodruff heard this they requested an immediate transfer to Adair which was closer, but they were all turned away.
I can understand why they don’t want anyone to interfere with their work. Their doing this to protect the people of this earth but because of the government and laws it slowed down process.
So far the ring fully expands from northern Pacific Ocean to the south.
Finishing the last sandwich I laid back and continued to enjoy this time alone on the roof.
“If only I could enjoy this peace for the rest of my life.”
And with that I dosed off atop the school building.
The school bell rang at twelve o’clock noon signaling that third period ended and lunch had begun.
“Mai do you want to have lunch in the clubroom?” Minami said out loud.
“Sorry Minami, but I’m going to have lunch somewhere else this time…”
Mai Yagami, who caught a ride to school with Sora Sendo, headed out of the classroom tightly holding onto the cyan bag she carried around. As she headed to the door she was stopped by Minami.
“Mai… is there something you’re not telling me?” Minami gave her a concerning look.
Minami Ihara is Mai’s close friend since they first met in junior high. Minami’s height was 155 centimeters and her weight was 46 kilograms. Her BWH was 82, 51, and 80 cm.
“Eh… I’m uh… going to see um… Sora’s class.”
“Sora!?”
As soon as Miami spoke his name the entire class went silent. A couple of boys looked away and groups of girls began to talk in their little circle.
To avoid causing a scene Minami grabbed Mai by the wrist and took her out of the class room.
Arriving to the vending machines at the end of the hall Minami didn’t say anything until she had something to drink. This was routine when she was teaching Mai about the harshness of life.
Picking out her favorite coffee opened it immediately and took a big gulp.
“Okay… You do know about Sora Sendo right?” Minami’s tone went sour as she looked at Mai with a stern expression on her face.
Mai stood still blushing with embarrassment lowering her head as before. Constantly looking up then back down Mai was trying to find the right words to say.
“I do know about him… he helped me out this morning making it to school on time.”
Mai looked at Minami then back down to her feet. Immediately Minami caught a hold of the atmosphere and gave Mai a piece of her mind.
“Did you know he is the delinquent who is the top of class? There was also a rumor that the students who attended the same schools as him had passed away within the last nine years.” Minami ranted on about the rumors like they were fact.
“Yes… I know about that.” Mai started to twist the little bag in her hand around.
Minami looked at Mai who was acting like a girl in love twiddling her fingers in embarrassment.
“Please don’t think about seeing that guy… you heard of all the rumors going around.”
Having concern for her friend Minami begged her not to go to the roof.
“I know about the rumors… but I don’t think he is a bad person.” Mai spoke gently about this person who was considered a bad role model for his age.
Minami dropped her can of coffee and grabbed Mai by her shoulders. Shaking a little she began to speaking ill of him once more. “He is a bad violent person and its best that you ignore him and try not to speak with him…”
However Mai, as innocent as she was had a strong will, gave Minami a piece of her mind.
“I know he is not a bad person… for the past three years he had always came to my grandfather’s shop. At the time I didn’t know his name but he would always come to the shop and buy the usual sandwich with green tea and a coffee for later before going to sch-…”
Mai stopped halfway looking at Minami in the eyes. Stepping back Minami nodded as if to confirm something.
“Y-you really like him don’t you?” Minami’s words shook from fear but as a friend she knew when her best friend was in love.
Mai was also blushing so much her face was turning red as she answered Minami with a light nod.
A couple of student could be heard making their way up the second floor.
“I… I do like him but I don’t believe he is the reason for all the deaths that happened in the past nine years.”
Minami knew words couldn’t persuade Mai at this point. When Mai spoke with little hesitation Minami knew she was serious.
“Okay… what can I do to help? You want to get his attention even more right?”
Mai’s face became even more flushed as her words started to sound like a whole different language.
Mai lifted the bag to shield her face from embarrassment, “I want him to have some of my bento as thanks for this morning.”
Minami smiled and grabbed Mai’s hands once more…
“C’mon let’s go someplace more secure to talk about this.”
Grabbing Mai’s hand once more they both headed up the stairs.
There was a gentle breeze that picked up… Sora was still resting on the rooftop, waiting for lunchtime to end. Sora’s peaceful rest was disturbed by footsteps making their way up the stair case.
“…I wonder who that could be…”
Sora mumbled before closing his eyes as if to try and go back relaxing. A conversation between two girls could be heard from the stairs. As the footsteps came closer to the door the second pair of footsteps disappeared.
The silence was broken when the door made a light creak signaling the door was opening.
“I knew you were here…” a female student called out from below.
The person began to climb the ladder that’s when Sora reached for his pocket. The footsteps stopped at his side with a couple of words that followed.
“Sora Sendo!” A demanding voice called out to him.
Taking his hand from the pocket Sora placed it back behind his head as a pillow.
“What do you want Reenie?” Letting out a sigh Sora spoke up in the same monotone voice.
Like a delinquent by name Sora spoke to the student council president without a care in the world.
Reenie Konno, the Student Council President stood beside Sora. She had a height of 156 centimeters, her weight kept secret. Her BWH was 78, 53, and 79.
“Don’t give me that attitude… I heard you came to school with a student by the name of Mai Yagami.”
Keeping silent Sora sat upright and looked towards the ocean. As if to play the role of an adult Sora kept his cool and acted like nothing had happened. Reaching in the plastic bag he took out the coffee which was still unopened. Sora opened the coffee drinking it all down in one go.
“Oh that… her grandfather asked me to bring her to school... Is it bad to help another student who was going to be late for class?”
Sora stood up and threw the can over the fence to a garbage can on the fist floor.
“Hey, there are rules against doing stuff like that… listen up.” Reenie folded her arms in frustration as she gat ready to begin her lecture. “There is nothing wrong with helping another student but given your reputation I would suggest you keep you distance away from a pure girl like Mai.”
Sora kept his attention away from Reenie but still listened to what she had to say.
“There was also some students saying you were the cause of your homeroom teacher’s accident… care to explain?”
Sora looked away clicking his teeth.
“So… the student council goes by the word of the students before actually hearing about what actually happened… you must be proud of yourself.” Sora said making his way to the ladder also avoiding eye contact.
“Hey! I’m still talking to you…”
Reenie grabbed Sora by the shoulder trying to forcing him to turn around. Staying still for a while Sora pulled his shoulder from her grasp. He turned around and walked back to spot he had picked out before finally saying what was on his mind.
“It doesn’t matter… It seems people like you hate it when I have friends.”
“Erk…” Reenie was never on to understand the mind of delinquents. Judging people just by their actions was her weak point.
Right now Reenie didn’t have time to think about Sora’s feelings… in her mind there was a student who was in danger just for riding to school with him.
Reenie sat where the ladder was blocking the path, Sora had no choice but to continue listening to Reenie’s lecture. Upon giving up Sora looks to the sky once more as if to get another glimpse of peace.
Once Reenie had his attention she pulled out a little black book and started reading from it. “You seem to have forgotten that you also have a reputation outside of the school as the Red Dragon… There have been reports from others student who witnessed your fights and misbehavior”
Sora turned his face away from Reenie. “…I didn’t choose to fight them, I was merely defending myself.”
Becoming frustrated by his actions she continued. “It was also said that the students who attacked you ended up in the hospital… why are you always fighting when you could be a good student with your grades?”
Closing the handbook Reenie folded her arms as if to await a response from Sora. Keeping her eyes on him… Sora’s silence continued to fuel her anger.
Only a minute had passed and Sora still had nothing to say. At the point of breaking Reenie was about to explode in anger.
Just then a couple of students could be heard making their way up the stairs. Immediately catching her attention Reenie turned to the doorway trying to find a way to end this silence.
“I’m going to talk to these students so don’t lea-…”
Though it only seemed like an instant Reenie turned back to Sora and who was nowhere to be found.
“Wha-? Sora you IDIOT!” She shouted at the top of her lungs.
Frustrated made her way down the ladder to intercept the students who were heading to the roof. As if fate she encountered Mai who was with Minami.
“Hold it right there… Mai Yagami”
Both students went silent and looked at Reenie expecting a lecture. Mai caressed her bento and hid behind Minami who was shielding her from Reenie.
“Hello Student Council President what are you doing on the rooftop?” Minami spoke in a calm tone of voice. “Mai and I were thinking of having our lunch on the roof… I know that isn’t against the school code.”
Reenie crossed her arms and spoke.
“Mai Yagami, I heard you came to school with another student by the name of Sora Sendo… care to explain what is going on?”
“Eeeh? Mai was with me walking to school, do you have the right to passing judgment on someone who is innocent.” Minami kept a strong front against Reenie.
Pushed to the point of breaking Reenie reached for the black handbook once more and turned to a page bookmarked with a photo.
“Oh? She was with you Minami Ihara?”
Reenie showed them a photo that she received from the photography club. The picture was of Sora and Mai arriving to school together on his bike.
“…” Minami kept silent for she was backed into a corner.
The two locked eyes and began their stand off.
“You were saying… Minami Ihara?”
Minami kept from loosing her cool as Mai clung tightly onto Minami’s shirt still trying to find the words. In the distant students could be heard enjoying their lunchtime. A cold wind pick up again.
Sora kept silent sitting on the other side of the fence that outlined the rooftop.
