Chapter 5- Parting
Words
The nightmares had comeback to haunt me once more.
How long has it been since I was unsuccessful from handling a mission with ease? There in the morning horizon I could see Earth’s ring in the distant above my original homeland.
Holding onto a railing, the clouds we passed break apart as they hit us.
“Fifteen seconds to departure… come back alive.”
The person in the cockpit says to me over the intercom. Now above Woodruff the cargo we carry is dropped as a decoy to conceal me.
Jumping off with the last box I fall into a sea of mist, the cold air pierces my exposed skin as I make my decent.
Now… is when things become difficult again.
Part 1
Summer had passed along with fall and winter was finally upon Chin Lee, Aripine, Oraibi, and Woodruff. The entire Island had been covered in a blanket of snow.
In Chin Lee people celebrated holidays more than the other cities.
The atmosphere was filled with people enjoying this end of the year event. Down the shopping district there were students who had take one part-time jobs. The most popular part-time job was selling cakes dressed in a Santa outfit.
It was now Christmas Eve and the 10th grade year of Sora’s class was coming to an end. Nearly at the end of their grade Sora’s reputation had changed and he was now seen as a role model in only six months.
Still at the top of his class Sora had become closer friends with Mai Yagami and Minami Ihara. Reenie Konno would sometimes hang out with Sora when she had time off from her Student Council duties.
5 O’clock, the school bell rang signaling the end of classes for the day and the start of afterschool activities. Students began to fill the halls some even bundled up with layers as the Go Home club who enjoyed the rest of the day off.
Back in Sora and Reenie’s class sat in the back room the previous known delinquent, Sora Sendo.
Sitting at his chair as he always had Sora closed a book placing it to the side and reaching for another from the stack right beside him. As Sora began reading the third book in his stack two students opened the door to the class letting themselves in.
“Ah Sora…” a gentle voice called out, “you were here after all.”
Placing a bookmark in between the page he was on Sora looked to the doorway. Mai was breathing heavily holding open the door with one hand.
“I have a present to give you…”
Catching her breath Mai walked towards Sora who was now focused on her.
“Mai…” Sora softly spoke back.
Standing right before him Mai handed over the gift. Keeping silent Sora reached for the bag
“I hope you like it… if it wasn’t for me being a novice I would’ve finished it earlier.”
Before he could open it the door burst open disturbing the moment.
“Mai did you give him you loving gift!?” Minami shouted out.
“Mi-minami?!”
“…”
Mai’s face became flushed as she backed away from Sora’s desk.
“Kuro Yuki… you harlot.” This was Minami’s name when Mai became nervous and turned to her Chuunibyou ways.
“Ah! I mean… can you keep an eye on my stuff, I have to see my teacher before I go home.” Mai changed the subject and headed to the exit.
Within the six months that passed Mai’s personality changed, she went from being a quiet bookworm to a girl who shouted her favorite anime quotes when she was nervous. But she wouldn’t act this was only when she was nervous, if Mai felt comfortable around the people around her she would say, “I am a Mahou Shoujo from the planet Arie X-3.”
“Okay, I’ll be here with Sora… better hurry up before I take him away ♥.” Minami winked at Mai.
Minami’s attention turned to Sora who had went back to reading his book. Grabbing a chair from the desk next to Sora, Minami sat down and watched him read.
“Ahh schools finally over for today… hey Sendo what are you going to do this evening?”
Minami asked still keeping a close eye on Sora.
“He hasn’t changed one bit since then…” Minami thought to herself.
Within the six months Minami has become closer to Sora as well. When the bad rumors began to spread around Minami was the one who put a stop to them.
As an energetic person she was on the basketball team as well as the soccer team. As a star player she even quit her afterschool clubs to prove a point that Sora was not a bad student.
Chin Lee needed to win the next couple of games to get better equipment for their school. It was the Principal’s decision to ignore Minami’s cub dropout and go forward with challenging other schools.
When the basketball team lost their first game without Minami the student began to go against the Principal’s words and wanted to forfeit.
The fear of loosing the next couple of games for both the soccer and basketball team made students think about the rumors. The possibility that the school’s very own principal was behind Sora bad reputation backed their decision.
It wasn’t until the soccer team ignored the principal and allowed Minami back on the team if they didn’t listen to the rumors about Sora again.
Winning their game the School Principal had no power to disband a winning team and sacrifice his school’s needs.
Chin Lee Academy was becoming a better when the students knew Sora Sendo was not as bad as the rumors told. Sora was finally being understood and liked by other students.
Still looking at Sora, Minami began to rock back-n-forth on the chair as if to get Sora’s attention.
“Hey Sendo… what are you going to do about Mai?”
“…what do you mean?”
Sora answered not breaking his concentration from the novel. Minami turned to her bag on the desk and pulled out two tickets.
“Here, I got these tickets for Mai and she said she wants to go with you.”
Still gliding his eyes across the pages Sora kept silent.
“C’mon… don’t make beg….”
Minami would start to bug Sora every time her questions were not answered in a timely matter.
“Hey Sendo, how’s this?”
Minami started to unbutton the top of her shirt and lean over the desk exposing her cleavage.
“…”
“…seriously?”
Nothing seemed to break his concentration from the paper not even Minami’s affectionate attacks.
Minami smiled and walked behind where Sora was sitting.
“Sendo?”
“…yeah”
Learning forward Minami started rubbing her chest on Sora’s back. Moving up and down his back she started to try and distract Sora with her feminine wiles.
“How is it… Sendo?”
It wasn’t seen by others but those close to Sora could sense when he was embarrassed.
“Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A… cheat unlocked ♥”
Minami released this secret move making Sora’s finger slip as he tried to turn to the next page.
“B,A?… oops!” Sora covered his mouth holding back the slip up.
Minami lent further in and whispered into Sora’s ear.
“Sendo… I can give you a full body massage if you want.”
At that moment a book fell on the ground catching their attention.
“Minami and Sora… together?” Mai stood at the class entrance in shock from what she had seen.
Minami quickly pulled herself away from Sora and tried to explain herself. “M-Mai it’s not what you think… we were just messing around… tell her Sora.”
Closing his book Sora responded to Mai with a blank expression across his face.
“Minami was trying to woo me into inviting you to a movie that you wanted to see with me…”
“SORA!!!”
Mai covered her face running down the hall and Minami pursued after her. Standing at the door Minami turned back to Sora who was still watching the two in amusement.
“Sendo you idiot… no I have to clean up this mess.”
Minami’s voice wavered as her face flushed beet red, turning back to her target Minami began to fun after Mai who had now made it to the stairs at the end of the hall.
Back at the classroom Sora looked at the opened door and waited. He began to yawn, exhausted from work Sora lowered his head onto the desk and started to drift away.
“Guess I’ll take this time to rest for a bit.” Sora muttered himself into a state of sleep.
There was never a time for him to rest at school ever since he became friends with Mai and Minami. But he didn’t mind, school was more peaceful and enjoyable for Sora now that the rumors had ended.
In the distant Minami could be heard shouting at Mai who was still running from what she had seen. Down the hall a pair of footsteps could be heard as Sora slept though the light noise.
Stopping at Sora’s class the person looked in.
“hehe… Guess I should come back another time…”
A girl with long dark blue hair in a red dress looked at Sora and lightly giggled. Closing the open door the mysterious girl walked back down the hall.
Back at the classroom Sora woke up immediately.
“T-this scent…”
The smell of Sora’s homeland filled the classroom. Standing upright Sora opened the door and immediately ran to where to scent was coming from.
From how strong the scent still lingered it was obvious it was coming from the stairs going to the roof.
“There!”
Showing a determined face unlike before Sora climbed the flight of stairs.
With each step he took upard the temperature began to drop. Finally making it to the top of the roof Sora hesitated as he held onto the door handle. Gripping tightly onto the handle Sora opened the door and walked outside.
A snow white covered roof greeting Sora as looked around hesitantly.
“…It’s gone…”
Clenching his fists Sora looked down to his feet and notices a couple of footsteps leading to the center before disappearing. Looking upward to the unfinished Earth ring Sora held up his right hand as if to reach for something.
“Why?”
Sora’s eyes began to fill with tears as snow started to descend down on him. The snow muffled out the sound of the students still enjoying their last day of afterschool activities.
Part 2
The afterschool clubs were ending early and the halls were once again filled with students making their way home.
Walking past those students was Sora who had time to clear his head on the rooftop.
“Ah, Sora… I thought you went home already.”
Looking at the student who called him was Chirstio Johnston, a foreign language maniac.
“…Chirstio, hello.” Sora bowed his head lightly towards Chirstio, looking back up he noticed two other students behind him, “And?”
Chirstio looked behind him, “Oh, these two needed help translating something they needed translated.”
Stepping forward the male student introduced himself first, “I’m Troy Klamert and this is…”
Pointing to the girl beside him, she introduced herself, “Mira… Mira Triluda.” Keeping her introduction short Mira focused her attention back to the book in hand.
“Um… well t-that’s how she is don’t mind her, Heh heh…” Troy scratched the back of his head.
“… How do you do, I’m Sora Sendo… sorry but I’m waiting for some people right now.”
“Oh okay… Gonna spend some quality time with Mai and Minami right?” Chirstio bumped Sora’s shoulder lightly.
“Well we have to go and take care of things downtown before celebrating… see you next year Sora.”
Chirstio waved to Sora as they headed to the stairs heading down.
Returning to the classroom Sora noticed a note on the table.
“We will be back… still trying to catch Mai and explain what you said out loud, Minami…”
Still holding onto the letter Sora whispered, “Heh, those girls…”
Looking to the window overlooking the courtyard Sora opened it just a bit before sitting down.
“It’s been so long since I felt this much at ease… oh”
Remembering Mai’s present from before, Sora reached inside his messenger bag.
“Mai’s gift… let’s see.”
Opening the little white and red bag laced with ribbons Sora reached inside. Pulling out a little box he shook it lightly before opening it.
The screams from the student outside could be heard as he lifted the lid.
“This is…” picking up the long chain Sora looked at the object attached at the end.
It was a pendant attached to the necklace… inside was a picture of both Mai and Sora.
“I remember this… it was three months ago and we spent our lunch on the roof eating together.”
Holding the necklace in his hand Sora whispered once more, “Mai… thank you.”
Putting the necklace on Sora began to feel sleepy from when he let out his emotions on the roof. Deciding to rest his head again Sora started to drift back to sleep.
When all the students left the school grounds only several remained to finish up things with was little time they had left. Among those students were the ones in the Student Council.
“Ah… I’m so tired.” Reenie yawned as she put her pencil down on the desk.
“Things should be fine from here on out… you can go home now Reenie.” The Treasurer said, “All that’s left is take these papers and file them in the teacher’s office.”
Looking at each other Reenie nodded placing the pencil inside her notebook.
“Well I guess I’m off for today, I’ll see you next year.”
“Okay, see you later… Prez.”
Walking out the Student Council room Reenie lightly bowed her head before exiting the room.
The hallway void of students gave the atmosphere of an abandoned building. Passing by each empty classroom Reenie’s footsteps and bell echoed through the corridors.
“This is creepy… eheh heh.” Chuckling nervously Reenie walked back to her classroom to retrieve her bag.
“Okay… I’ve had enough of this silence.”
Finally arriving to her class Reenie stood before the door and reached for the handle. On cue a noise of something falling on the floor broke to silence.
“Kya!”
The noise came from behind the door followed by a thump.
“Wh-who’s there?” Gripping the door handle once more Reenie slid the door open.
“Sora…”
From being scared to being embarrassed in an instant Reenie saw Sora sleeping on his desk. Walking towards him she notices his pencil case and bag on the floor.
“So that’s what it was… teheh heh.”
Picking up his fallen school materials she placed it onto the desk next to Sora’s. Reenie stared at his sleeping face and smiled.
“Sora? Are you awake?”
Reenie called out as she pulled up a chair right next to him, “After the six months we’ve known each other you haven’t changed one bit… right Sora?”
Brushing Sora’s bangs to the side Reenie giggled once more admiring his sleeping face.
“Hey… don’t wake up right now…”
Reenie’s face turned red as she leaned forward. Breathing softly Reenie closed her eyes gently kissing Sore on the cheek.
Sora opened his eyes greeted by the soft touch of Reenie’s lips on his face, he blushed and didn’t say a word.
Pulling her face away for a couple of centimeters Reenie whispered…
“Sora…”
“Yes?”
“Eh? Kyah!”
Jumping back after letting out a little scream Reenie covered her face in embarrassment. Waking up from his nap Sora kept the same pose as their eyes met. Peeking through her parted hands Reenie began to blush again, this time more than usual.
“S-sora… why didn’t you tell me you were awake?”
Sitting up right Sora stretched out before answering her question.
“Because you told me, not to wake up right now.”
Entranced by each other’s gaze a cold breeze interrupted the lightly cracked window.
“Oh…”
Breaking the silence between them Sora looked to the opened window. Standing up from the chair he walked to close it before seeing Minami and Mai making their usual rounds in the courtyard.
“Kuro Yuki you will not deceive me!” Mai shouted raising her fist in the air with Minami shouting back.
“Stop Mai it was a joke… STOP!” Minami shouted back this time with a plastic bag in her other hand. “I have your favorite snack… stop right now you dolt!”
Looking at the two girls Sora lightly smiled, “… what are they doing?”
“Eh?” seeing Sora’s smile from behind Reenie kept silent.
Sora closed the window keeping his hand gently placed on the screen. His face turned a melancholy state before he spoke.
“Reenie…” sliding his hand down the window Sora continued, “What do you think about Christmas?”
Turning to face Reenie the setting sun could be seen touching the mountain top be hind Sora. Standing perfectly still kept his eyes on Reenie waiting for her answer.
Reenie lowered her hands and spoke lightly.
“W-what do I think? Um… I like it a lot, hanging out with friends and having fun at the end of the year as well.”
Christmas was closing in fast along with advancing to the 11th grade from Chin Lee Academy. Sora kept the melancholic expression on as he turned back to look out the window.
“That sounds like fun…”
Letting go of the window Sora spoke up again, this time it sounded like he was on the verge of tears.
“I… I will be leaving a couple of days after Christmas ends… I won’t be back until after the New Year.”
All Reenie could do was watch and listen to the person she once despised before.
“It makes me wish I could spend the New Year with everyone I’ve made friends with… especially you three who gave me a chance to live a normal high school life.”
Glanced back to Reenie as a single tear dropped down his cheek. “Ah… sorry, didn’t mean to bring this upon you.” Turning his face back Sora wiped the tear line away.
Not being able to take it anymore Reenie stepped forward and patted Sora on the back to comfort him.
“You’re not sounding like yourself Sora… I’m sure we’ll have some fun all together once the next year comes.”
Sliding her hand up to his shoulders Reenie lent in and hugged Sora from behind letting the tears flow just like back in July.
The classroom began to fill with and orange hue from the setting sun. Reenie and Sora were the only two students who occupied the vacant classroom. Standing together in the warm sunlight they seemed closer than before.
Their relationship had always been bad ever since they first met. Now, Reenie had started to have strong feelings for Sora.
Hugging Sora tightly Reenie spoke out… her words were muffled by the sound of Sora’s tear soaked shirt.
“Please tell me your alright… it pains me to see you this way, okay Sora?”
Feeling the warmth of Reenie hugging him Sora placed his hands onto hers.
“Reenie, I want you to remember something for me…”
Sora turned around and hugged her back… this was the first time he has ever hugged anyone before… Clinging to each other like lovers.
“I’m listening Sora… please tell me what you want me to remember…”
Bringing his mouth to her ear Sora lightly whispered.
“Kei Shiiro, th-…”
A plane passed over the campus securing Sora’s words to Reenie.
Nodding in agreement into his chest Reenie looked up and felt Sora’s warm lips touch hers.
Alone in the classroom, their lips still clasping, Reenie let out her tears of love and joy because she knew that Sora may never return to Chin Lee.
